Seeded players Marina Erakovic and Caroline Garcia highlighted Monday's first-round victors as play commenced at the $235,000 Bell Challenge tournament.
Erakovic, seeded sixth in the field of 32, rallied to earn a hard-fought 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 decision over American Mallory Burdette at the Laval University campus. The New Zealand resident was the runner-up to Barbora Zahlavova Strycova at this event in 2011.
The eighth-seeded Garcia had an easier time in her opening match, disposing of Canadian wild card Aleksandra Wozniak by a 6-3, 6-4 count.
Garcia will next face American Christina McHale, who easily handled 2010 champion Tamira Paszek 6-2, 6-1.
Croat Alja Tomljanovic also advanced, topping Maria Sanchez in a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 verdict.
Kirsten Flipkins is the defending champion and top seed of this indoor hardcourt tournament and will take on Polona Hercog in Tuesday's first round.
