A second-half goal from Erick Torres was the difference as Chivas USA secured a 1-0 win over D.C. United at the StubHub Center on Sunday in a battle of last-place teams.

The result makes United the first team in MLS to officially be eliminated from playoff contention, while it is just a matter of time before Chivas suffers the same fate.

Both sides lacked any real creativity in the first half and the two best chances fell to United's Conor Doyle, but he was unable to beat Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

Eric Avila offered the first threat for the home side in the 50th minute when his shot forced D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid to tip the ball around the post.

The ensuing corner led to the lone goal as the ball was loose inside the middle of the area, where Torres was the first to pounce and he fired his shot into the bottom left corner of the net.

United's Nick DeLeon attempted to level the contest with a well-struck shot, but he could only sting the palms of Kennedy, who comfortably kept the ball out.
