The second week of the college football season is in the books, and there were some standout victories (and losses) across the FCS landscape.
Top-ranked North Dakota State kept its roll going with a 56-10 win over Ferris State. And Eastern Washington, one week after defeating Oregon State, beat yet another Oregon-based program in Western Oregon, 43-14.
No. 3 Montana State lost to FBS opponent SMU by a mere point, while Sam Houston State and Central Arkansas - also Top 10 in the FCS nation - dropped contests to Texas A&M and Colorado, respectively.
After losing its season-opening game to Boston College, Villanova tried to rebound against Fordham, but didn't muster the comeback effort and fell to the Rams, 27-24. Is it time to panic in Wildcat Country? At 0-2 to start the year, it's certainly nothing to shrug off.
In Week 2, whether it be scores, statistics or big-time performances, the numbers never lie. Here are some important figures from Week 2 of the FCS season which stood out:
New FCS programs and current independents Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word ran all over their lesser-division opponents Saturday. Incarnate Word jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back against NAIA's Texas College, defeating the Steers, 69-0. Abilene Christian routed Division III McMurray, 60-17.
In two games this season, Abiliene Christian has rattled off 144 points against Concordia and McMurray.
Youngstown State set a program record in its 67-13 win over Morehead State by gaining 718 yards of total offense in the rout - 359 yards each from the running game and passing game. Jody Webb, the team's leading rusher Saturday, provided three touchdowns on the ground.
In Bethune-Cookman's 66-7 clobbering of Virginia Union, the Wildcats saw six different players account for seven total touchdowns on the ground and through the air. Three different quarterbacks recorded passing scores, while four carried the ball in on the ground (quarterback Quentin Williams was the only player to record multiple scores with a passing and rushing touchdown).
Two B-CU defenders also scored on interception returns, Nick Addison and Erik Williams.
Eastern Illinois needed overtime to beat the Southern Illinois Salukis and moved to 2-0 in an offense-first game. The two teams combined for 1,125 yards of total offense (622 Eastern Illinois, 503 Southern Illinois), while Eastern quarterback and Walter Payton Award candidate Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 440 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.
Wofford now owns a 15-game win streak over The Citadel after Saturday's 21-10 Terriers' victory. The Citadel is 0-2 to start the year in what should be a wide-open Southern Conference title race.
A win streak of sorts snapped for North Dakota when it lost by a touchdown, 35-28, to No. 6-ranked South Dakota State in the annual Potato Bowl. North Dakota had won its previous 10 Potato Bowl games, but faced a tough South Dakota State team for the second time since both teams became members of the FCS.
South Dakota State running back Zach Zenner matched his school record by cruising for 295 rushing yards against North Dakota. Zenner boosted his stat sheet with three rushing scores and a receiving touchdown to help the Jackrabbits stay unbeaten.
For the second year in a row, Sam Houston State put up 28 points against the current No. 7-ranked team in the FBS nation in Texas A&M. Don't get the wrong idea, the Bearkats were mauled, 65-28. But Sam Houston's explosive offense did its part by putting up solid numbers against one of the country's best teams.
Timothy Flanders was the game's only 100-yard rusher, accounting for 170 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He also caught a touchdown pass against the Aggies.
After having a bye the first week of the season, the Lehigh Mountain Hawks opened their season with Central Connecticut State Saturday. Lehigh wide receiver Lee Kurfis set a pretty high standard for himself, gaining 222 yards receiving with two touchdown catches in a 51-44, double-overtime triumph.
Three more FCS teams defeated their FBS opponents this weekend, adding to the eight from Week 1. Chattanooga took down Georgia State, while Maine defeated former Colonial Athletic Association rival Massachusetts and Nicholls edged Western Michigan.
