The Chicago Cubs claimed pitcher Daniel Bard off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.

The Cubs also designated outfielder Cole Gillespie for assignment.

The 28-year-old Bard appeared in just two games for the Red Sox this season.

The right-hander is 10-19 with five saves and a 3.67 ERA in 211 career games with Boston. He spent the majority of the past two seasons in the minor leagues after being converted to a starting pitcher prior to the 2012 season.

Gillespie was hitting .203 with two doubles and four RBI in 28 games with the San Francisco Giants and the Cubs this season.
