A frustrating deadline day for Manchester United culminated in the club adding Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini for a fee of nearly $43 million just before the close of the transfer window.

United entered the day in pursuit of Fellaini, his teammate Leighton Baines and Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.

But after deals for both Herrera and Baines fell through, as well as a proposed loan move for Real Madrid left back Fabio Coentrao, United salvaged a disappointing day with the capture of Fellaini.

The 25-year-old joined the Toffees from Standard Liege six years ago, and he went on to amass 25 goals in 141 games at Goodison Park.

Fellaini will be reunited with former Everton boss David Moyes at United after he turned in a transfer request on Monday to help push the move through.
