Reliever Daniel Bard was designated for assignment Sunday by the Boston Red Sox.

Bard, who once pitched in at least 70 games in back-to-back seasons for the Red Sox, has only appeared in 19 major league games the past two seasons, including only two this year in April with a 9.00 ERA.

The right-hander has a career 3.67 ERA. He had a combined ERA of 2.62 in 2010 and 2011, when he pitched in 143 total games. Bard can now be claimed by another team.

The Red Sox added outfielder Quintin Berry and infielder John McDonald to the active major league roster as September call-ups. The team acquired McDonald on Saturday from the Philadelphia Phillies and got Berry in a trade with the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.

In other moves, the Red Sox recalled right-hander Rubby De La Rosa and catcher Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Pawtucket and activated infielder Brandon Snyder from the 15-day disabled list.
