Monaco goes top thanks to Marseille defeat

A pair of second-half goals were enough to see Monaco climb to the top of the Ligue 1 table on Sunday as the club claimed a 2-1 victory over Marseille at the Stade Velodrome.

Lucas Michel Mendes put the home side in front just before halftime by heading home Mathieu Valbuena's cross, but Radamel Falcao managed to get Monaco back on equal terms two minutes after the halftime interval by turning in Layvin Kurzawa's cross from close range.

The two sides remained level until the 79th minute when Emmanuel Riviere collected Joao Moutinho's pass and fired a right-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Riviere's strike brought his league tally to five on the season, good enough for top spot on the Ligue 1 scoring chart.

It also helped Monaco improve to 10 points through four matches, leaving the club in first place in the French top flight where it sits one point clear of Marseille and St. Etienne.

St. Etienne kept pace at the top of the Ligue 1 table by claiming a 2-1 victory over Bordeaux at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Sunday. Romain Hamouma and Loic Perrin produced the goals for the home side while Ludovic Obraniak's late strike was not enough to spark a comeback for Bordeaux.

In Sunday's final Ligue 1 match, Nice and Montpellier played to a 2-2 draw at the Stade Municipal du Ray as Thimothee Kolodzieczak and Valentin Eysseric exchanged goals with Souleymane Camara and Siaka Tiene.
