The Kansas City Chiefs hope they've finally assembled the right 53.
That was the phrase that former general manager Scott Pioli used to describe his ideal roster, but he never really came close to achieving it. In fact, his pursuit of the right 53 ended with a 2-14 record last year.
The Chiefs have overhauled that roster this year under new GM John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid. The result is 26 newcomers on the roster, and it could soon be 27 when they fill a roster spot that still remains open. Among them are 10 rookies, two of them Ivy Leaguers.
Dorsey and Reid will find out whether they're close to their right 53 when they open the season next Sunday at Jacksonville.
