Atlanta, GA – Julio Teheran spun 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball as the Atlanta Braves edged the Miami Marlins, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game set at Turner Field.
Teheran (11-7) scattered four hits and three walks while striking out eight to win for the fourth time in his last six starts.
"They (Teheran and Marlins starter Jose Fernandez) both had tough innings. Those guys will battle for years to come," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez.
Freddie Freeman smashed a two-run homer and Elliot Johnson added a double and a run scored for the Braves, winners in five straight.
Anthony Varvaro earned his first career save after spinning a pair of scoreless innings.
With the win, and a Washington loss, Atlanta leads the Nationals by 14 games atop the NL East standings.
Jose Fernandez (10-6) gave up two runs on three hits while striking out six to suffer his first loss since July 7. In his past 10 starts, the hard-throwing rookie had limited his opponents to two or fewer runs.
"They were the better team we just came up a little short. That is why they're in first place," said Fernandez.
Christian Yelich drove in the lone run for the Marlins, losers in five straight and nine of their last 10 games.
The Braves wasted no time getting on the board as Freeman smashed his 17th homer of the season in the first inning. Johnson ripped a one-out double to right before Freeman crushed the first pitch he saw over the center-field wall.
The Marlins came back with a run in the third, but it would be the last time either team crossed the plate the rest of the way. Fernandez helped his own cause with a leadoff triple then score on Yelich's single to left field.
Atlanta loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but was unable to add an insurance run as reliever Dan Jennings got Jordan Schafer to ground into a force out before fanning Johnson to end the frame.
Varvaro gave up a leadoff single in the eighth, but got Justin Ruggiano to ground into a double play before setting down the next four batters of the game to seal the win.
Teheran is 4-2 since the All-Star break ... Atlanta is 17-9 in games that Teheran has started this season ... the Marlins were 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position ... Fernandez hasn't allowed more than three earned runs since May 27.
