A person familiar with the situation says the New York Jets have released veteran defensive tackle Antonio Garay as the team gets to the mandatory 53-player roster limit.

Garay had signed with the Jets in March to add depth to the team's defensive line, but the emergence of both Damon Harrison and Leger Douzable made him expendable. He spent the last four seasons with San Diego.

Another person familiar with the move tells The Associated Press on Friday that the Jets have cut kicker Dan Carpenter, giving incumbent Nick Folk the job. Carpenter, cut by Arizona, was signed by the Jets Tuesday to compete with Folk, who beat out Billy Cundiff earlier in training camp.

Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because the Jets had not announced the moves.
