College Football Top Matchups This Weekend On FOX!

The 2013 college football season is underway with this week's top matchups featuring conference play. The Big 12 Conference's first league game of the season features the West Virginia Mountaineers at Oklahoma Sooners. These two teams are in similar situations entering the season, having to find a replacement for long-time starting quarterbacks who have moved on. The Mountaineers will have three quarterbacks vying for the starter's role including Clint Trickett, who served as a backup at Florida State. Also in the mix are Paul Millard, who served as Gino Smith's backup, and Ford Childress, a red-shirt freshman. The Sooners have two players vying for the starting role in Blake Bell, and Trevor Knight, with Bell the favorite heading into the season. A third option, Kendal Thompson, broke his foot in the opening fall practice, limiting the Sooners' options. Both teams have a solid stable of running backs and this should be their strength. The difference between the two teams may come down to overall depth at every position. This is where the Sooners move ahead as they have enough depth for a top 25 pre-season nod while WVU enters the season unranked. Also on tap this week is a PAC-12 conference matchup with USC hosting the Washington State Cougars. The Cougars are in their second season under head coach Mike Leach and his pass-happy offense. Normally in the cellar of the North Division of the PAC-12, Leach expects this team to advance to a bowl game this year. After starting 17 freshmen last season, expect the Cougars to show a lot of progress in understanding the new offensive scheme. The USC Trojans will have to replace their star quarterback Matt Barkley and overcome a depth problem. However, there are some intriguing prospects in Los Angeles. The backfield will be strong with Silas Redd and D.J. Morgan and the Trojans have the 2012 Biletnikoff winner, Marqise Lee, at receiver. If USC can find a decent quarterback from Max Wittek, Cody Kessler and five-star, blue chip freshman Max Browne, this team could be in the mix for the PAC-12 title.
