The Bruins have signed general manager Peter Chiarelli to a four-year contract extension through the 2017-18 season.

Chiarelli, who has built a team that has advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals two of the last three years, will also continue on as alternate governor on the NHL's Board of Governors.

Next month, when training camp opens, Chiarelli, 49, will enter his eighth season with Boston. The Bruins have qualified for the playoffs in six of his first seven years, and won the Stanley Cup in 2011.

Boston has compiled a 291-187-62 record with Chiarelli in the front office, and has had five seasons of 90 points or more.

Chiarelli is also a member of the Team Canada management group for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
