Goodes claims early Boeing Classic lead

Snoqualmie, WA – Snoqualmie, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Goodes fired an 8-under 64 on Friday to claim a 1-stroke lead after the opening round of the Boeing Classic.

Goodes, who earned his lone victory on the Champions Tour at the 2009 Allianz Championship, has three top-10 finishes this season.

"I'm craving it, I'm dying to win, but that doesn't necessarily mean you will. I would love to win again," Goodes said.

Mark Brooks carded a 7-under 65 during his opening round at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge to sit alone in second place.

Gene Sauers, Scott Hoch, Mark O'Meara, Jeff Sluman and Mark McNulty all shot a 6-under 66 to share third place, while Tommy Armour III, Mark Calcavecchia, David Frost, Woody Austin and Doug Garwood are tied for eighth at 5-under 67.

Goodes got his bogey-free round off to a quick start by holing out from a greenside bunker for an eagle at the first.

After parring the next five holes, he rolled in back-to-back birdies at the seventh and eighth to make the turn at 4-under.

He picked up another shot at the 11th before racing into the clubhouse with three birdies over his final four holes to claim the lead at minus-8.

"Obviously I had to play pretty good, but it was a couple up-and-downs that really saved my round early," said Goodes. "Drove the ball really good, made some decent putts."

Brooks started on the back nine and also quickly moved into red numbers as he birdied his first three holes, including a hole-out birdie from a bunker at the third.

He would later birdie the 16th before jumping to 6-under with an eagle at the 18th.

Brooks birdied the second and fourth around a bogey at the third to pull within a shot of the lead, but he parred his final five holes to end a shot off the pace.

"I have no idea what I'll shoot tomorrow. I'll go out there on the first hole with a game plan and I'll try to hit a good shot and we'll go from there," Brooks said about his plan for the second round.

NOTES: Goodes holds the first-round lead for the fourth time on the Champions Tour ... Brooks is seeking his first career win on tour. He has five top-10 finishes over 80 career tour starts ... Defending champion John Riegger carded a 1-over 73 and is tied for 58th place.
