The San Diego Padres recalled pitcher Brad Brach from Triple-A Tucson and designated pitcher Edinson Volquez for assignment.
Brach went 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA in 25 appearances for the Padres this season and will be making his fourth stint with the team.
Volquez last pitched on Friday against the Cubs, surrendering six runs -- five earned -- over two-thirds of an inning. This season, he is 9-10 with a 6.01 ERA in 27 starts.
Acquired from the Reds as part of a five-player trade in December 2011, the 30-year-old right-hander has gone 53-50 with a 4.77 ERA in 153 career games (149 starts) with the Rangers (2005-07), Reds (2008-11) and Padres (2012-13).
The Padres currently have 38 players on their 40-man roster.
