Nashville, TN – Jake Locker and Ryan Fitzpatrick combined for three touchdown passes as the Tennessee Titans defeated the Atlanta Falcons, 27-16, on Saturday.
Locker was nearly perfect, completing 11-of-13 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, while Fitzpatrick was 6-for-9 with two touchdowns and an interception for the Titans, who won their first preseason contest.
Nate Washington had four receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown, while Chris Johnson rushed 11 times for 65 yards in the victory.
Matt Ryan went 11-of-19 for 138 yards for the Falcons. Julio Jones had four catches for 81 yards. Darius Johnson also had four receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
Jeremy Shelley made two field goals in the first quarter, a 27-yarder and a 31-yarder, respectively, for the Falcons, while the Titans were held scoreless.
However, Tennessee scored 13 points in the second. Washington caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Locker and Rob Bironas drilled two field goals, including a 53-yarder late in the half.
The Titans added to their lead in the third when Fitzpatrick found Justin Hunter for a 3-yard score midway through the frame.
However, Atlanta was undeterred. Shelley made a 32-yard field goal with 3:29 left in the third quarter. On the Titans' ensuing possession, Robert Alford picked off a deep pass by Fitzpatrick on the first play. The replay assistant challenged it as an incomplete pass, but the call was upheld.
Darius Johnson then hauled a 41-yard TD reception from Dominique Davis, who finished 7-for-14 for 105 yards, and the Falcons cut the deficit to 20-16.
However, on their next drive at the 12 yard-line, Davis' pass intended for Chase Coffman was intercepted by Jonathan Willard.
With excellent field position, Jackie Battle ran five times for 16 yards. Fitzpatrick completed the drive with a 6-yard TD toss to Michael Preston with 7:43 remaining in regulation to account for the final margin.
