The Washington Capitals have signed center Mikhail Grabovski to a one-year, $3 million contract.

Grabovski spent the past five seasons with Toronto, but became a free agent in July when the Maple Leafs used a buyout on the final four seasons of a five- year deal he signed in March 2012.

The 29-year-old veteran notched just nine goals and 16 points in 48 games during the truncated 2013 season. He had 52 goals and 109 points over 155 games the previous two years.

"Mikhail adds speed and offense to our lineup, and we are very pleased to have him sign with the Capitals," said Washington general manager George McPhee in a statement Friday. "We believe he will be an excellent addition to our club."

Originally selected by the Canadiens in the fifth round of the 2004 draft, Grabovski has racked up 94 goals and 217 points in 367 career games with Montreal and Toronto.
