The San Francisco Giants have placed pitcher Chad Gaudin on the 15-day disabled list due to carpal tunnel syndrome and designated outfielder Jeff Francoeur for assignment.

Gaudin last pitched on Friday against Miami, allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits over four innings. He was scheduled to start Wednesday against the Red Sox, but Barry Zito will take his place in the rotation.

The 30-year-old right-hander is 5-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 30 games (12 starts) this season.

Francoeur signed with the Giants on July 9 after being designated for assignment by Kansas City. He batted .194 with four RBI in 22 games.

For the season, Francoeur is hitting .204 with three home runs and 17 RBI in 81 games.

The Giants have recalled pitchers Mike Kickham and Jean Machi from Triple-A Fresno to take their places.

Kickham, 24, is 0-3 with a 10.61 ERA in five games (three starts) for the Giants. This will be his fourth stint with the team this season.

Machi, 31, is 2-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 33 appearances with the Giants. This will be his fifth stint with San Francisco this year.
