Bryant hangs on to win in New York

Endicott, NY – Bart Bryant carded an even-par 72 on Sunday to hang on for a 1-stroke win at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open.

Bryant claimed his first career victory on the Champions Tour at 16-under-par 200. With the win, Bryant became the 1,000th winner on the Champions Tour.

"Whether you're 1,001 or 999 it's pretty special, but this is even more special," Bryant said about being the tour's 1,000th winner. "It's just a really cool moment, something that I'll always treasure."

Russ Cochran (67) and Corey Pavin (69) shared second place at En-Joie Golf Course at 15-under, while Gene Sauers (67) and Duffy Waldorf (69) tied for fourth at minus-14.

Chien Soon Lu (65) took sixth place at 13-under, and John Cook (65), Kenny Perry (68) and Rod Spittle (69) occupied seventh at 12-under 204.

Bryant entered the final round with a 4-stroke lead over Pavin and the 50- year-old was rarely threatened during the round despite his up-and-down play.

Bryant opened his round with three straight pars before tripping to a bogey at the fourth.

After parring his next three holes, Bryant rolled in back-to-back birdies at the eighth and ninth to make the turn at 17-under.

No one was able to pull closer than two strokes of the lead from there as Bryant parred his next seven holes until Cochran poured in his sixth birdie of the day at the 16th to move to 16-under.

He had also recorded gains at Nos. 3, 5, 7, 10 and 13.

Cochran would then fail to convert an 8-foot par putt at the 18th for a costly bogey to fall to minus-15.

Bryant followed in the final group and was able to hang on for the win despite a 3-putt bogey at the same hole.

"I just never felt settled today," said Bryant. "Luckily, I was able to kind of hang on there and make some good four, five, even six footers. A lot of those were due to poor first putts unfortunately, but that was kind of the key to me winning today playing kind of poorly, but I was very solid on those putts up until the last hole."

NOTES: It was Bryant's 14th start on the Champions Tour ... Bryant's last career win came at the 2005 Tour Championship on the PGA Tour ... Bryant is the fourth tour rookie to win this season, joining Rocco Mediate (Allianz Championship), Esteban Toledo (Insperity Championship) and Kohki Idoki (Senior PGA Championship ... Mark Mouland was disqualified on Sunday for signing an incorrect scorecard.
