Eric Hosmer hit a two-run home run and James Shields tossed seven innings to help Kansas City complete a sweep of a day/night doubleheader over Detroit with a 3-0 win.

Shields (8-8) gave up just three hits and four walks to win for the fourth time in his past five starts. Jamey Carroll added a sacrifice fly for the Royals, who bounced back from Thursday's loss to open this five-game series with a pair of wins on Friday.

"We wanted to come in here and make a statement against these guys," Royals manager Ned Yost said.

Hosmer also homered in the opener as Kansas City got six strong innings from spot starter Danny Duffy to post a 2-1 victory.

Jose Alvarez (1-3) dropped his third straight start as he was charged with two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Miguel Cabrera's double was one of four hits for the AL Central leaders, who have dropped five of their last seven.

"Both teams got great pitching, and we didn't muster enough offense," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

The Royals, who pulled within 6 1/2 games of first place, got on the board in the third as Carroll walked with two outs and Hosmer followed with his 14th home run of the season.

Detroit put its first two runners on base to start the third, but Cabrera grounded out while Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez flied out to end the frame.

Kansas City added a run in the seventh as Chris Getz led off with a single, moved to third on a bad pickoff throw from Jeremy Bonderman, and scored on Carroll's sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.

Detroit stranded a man on base in the fifth and seventh, Luke Hochevar worked a 1-2-3 eighth and Greg Holland kept Detroit off the board in the ninth to pick up his 34th save of the season.
