Miles Chamley-Watson (Philadelphia, Pa.) claimed the gold medal in men's foil with a 15-6 final victory over Russia's Artur Akhmatkhuzin at the 2013 Senior Fencing World Championships, held Aug. 5-12 in Budapest, Hungary. The 2012 Olympian is the first American man to claim an individual championship title. Meanwhile Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) finished fifth in women's saber and the men's saber team placed eighth.

EATON DOES IT AGAIN

Ashton Eaton (Bend, Ore.) defended his title as the "world's greatest athlete," winning the decathlon at the 2013 IAAF World Outdoor Championships, held August 10-18 in Moscow. Meanwhile, Brittney Reese (Gulfport, Miss.) earned a second gold medal for Team USA in the long jump with a distance of 7.01 meters and Justin Gatlin (Woodham, Fla.) earned the silver medal in the 100-meter.

CANOE/KAYAK

Kaitlyn McElroy (Oklahoma City, Okla.) earned multiple titles at the 2013 Sprint National Championships, held August 8-10 in Oklahoma City. She captured the K1 200-meter and then paired with Maggie Hogan (San Diego, Calif.) to win the K2 200 and the K4 500. On the men's side, Ian Ross (Bethesda, Md.) earned both the C1 5,000 and C2 1,000 titles.

CYCLING

Lea Davison (Jericho, Vt.) earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:31:48 at the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, held Aug. 8-10 in Mont-Sainte Anne, Quebec. As the top male finisher for the U.S., Stephen Ettinger (Cashmere, Wash.) placed 20th.

Bobby Lea (Mertztown, Pa.) finished with a time of 4:34.137 to win the men's individual pursuit at the USA Cycling Elite Timed Track National Championships, held Aug. 9-11 in Carson, Calif. On the women's side, Jade Wilcoxson (Talent, Ore.) claimed first in 3:45.605.

Bailey Semian (Mertztown, Pa.) captured an 11th-place finish in the women's omnium race at the2013 UCI Juniors Track World Championships, held Aug. 7-11 in Glasgow, Scotland. Meanwhile, Sarah Huang (Pleasant Prairie, Wis.) finished 13th and Tara McCormick (Long Beach, Calif.) took 17th in the women's keirin race.

FIELD HOCKEY

The U.S. Men's National Team began pool play with an 8-0 loss to No. 1-ranked Argentina at the Pan American Cup, held Aug. 11-17 in Brampton, Ontario.

ROWING

The U.S. women's four captured the gold medal to earn one of two medals for Team USA at the 2013 World Rowing Junior Championships, held Aug. 7-11 in Trakai, Lithuania. In women's quadruple sculls, the U.S. took silver, while the women's eight finished fifth and the men's four placed sixth.

RUGBY

The U.S. defeated South Africa, 61-5, to finish third at the 2013 IRB Women's Nations Cup, held July 30-10 in Glendale, Colo. The U.S. fell to England two days before in Greely, Colo., but recovered to finish the competition with a 3-1 record.

SOFTBALL

The U.S. opened the VIII Pan American Women's Softball Qualifier - held Aug. 10-18 in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico - with a pair of round-robin wins over Colombia (16-0) and Brazil (11-0).

Team USA claimed its first gold medal of the season at the Copa Francisco Reyes Cup, held Aug. 6-9 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The U.S. outplayed Canada, 11-5, and Argentina, 5-1, before defeating Puerto Rico, 10-1, and then Cuba, 4-1. As the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, the team was declared the winner after the championship was cancelled due to inclement weather.

SWIMMING

Christine Jennings (Longmont, Colo.) captured a second-place finish with a time of 2:26:53 at the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup, held Aug. 8-10 in Lac Megantic, Quebec. Emily Brunemann Crescent Springs, Ky.) was close behind, finishing third. On the men's side, Drew Ledwith (Keene, N.H.) and Cory Mayfield (Ranchos Palos Verde, Calif.) finished 10th and 11th.

Tyler Clary (Riverside, Calif.) clocked a time of 3:36:86 to win the men's 400- meter freestyle at the 2013 FINA Swimming World Cup, held Aug. 8-10 in Berlin. He also took the silver medal in the 200 backstroke, while Thomas Shields (Huntington Beach, Calif.) won the 100 butterfly and Claire Donahue (Dallas, Texas) captured a fifth-place finish in the women's 100 butterfly.

Tyler Clary (Riverside,Calif.) finished second in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2013 FINA Swimming World Cup, held Aug. 7-8 in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Thomas Shields (Huntington Beach, Calif.) finished second in the 100 butterfly, while David Plummer placed fourth in the 100 backstroke.

TENNIS

Serena Williams (Saginaw, Mich.) ousted Romania's Sorana Cirstea, 6-2, 6-0, to win the 2013 Rogers Cup, held Aug. 8-11 in Toronto. She did not drop a single set as she cruised to her third championship title, and 54th WTA title. In the men's competition - which took place in Montreal - the doubles team of Bob Bryan (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla.) and Mike Bryan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) made it to the quarterfinals, but fell to Canada's Daniel Nestor and Swede Robert Lindstedt, 6-7(2), 6-3, 10-5.

TRIATHLON

Katie Hursey (Hampstead, Md.) clocked in at 1:00:25 to claim her second straight world cup victory at the Tiszaujvaros ITU World Cup, held August 10-11 in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary. Erin Jones (Hood River, Ore.) finished eighth, while Tommy Zaferes (Santa Cruz, Calif.) was the top U.S. male finisher in 16th place.

VOLLEYBALL

The U.S. women continued pool play in Belgrade, Serbia, with a victory over the host nation at the FIVB World Grand Prix, held Aug. 2-18. With previous wins against Algeria and the Netherlands in pool F, the U.S. now has a record of 5-1 and will face the Czech Republic on Friday (Aug. 16).

Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) claimed the bronze medal at the FIVB Berlin Beach Volleyball Grand Slam, held Aug. 6-11. It was the first medal for the two, who overcame Germany's No. 1 Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler in the semifinals before topping the Czech Republic's Marketa Slukova and Kristyna Kolocova, 17, 21-18, 17-21, 15-12.
