Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez won the National League Rookie of the Month award for August.

He became the first pitcher to win the award twice in the same season since Craig Kimbrel in 2011, and the first pitcher to win in consecutive months since Josh Johnson in 2006.

Fernandez went 3-1 and his 49 strikeouts led the N.L. and ranked second across the majors. Over his six starts, he had a 1.15 ERA in 39 innings pitched.

Fernandez started the month with a 14-strikeout performance following his 13 strikeout effort on July 28th. That gave him his fourth double-digit strikeout game, making him the first N.L. rookie pitcher to accomplish the feat since Cole Hamels in 2006.

Other rookies considered for the honor included Milwaukee Brewers infielder Scooter Gennett and outfielder Khris Davis, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig, San Diego infielder Jedd Gyorko, and Philadelphia's Darin Ruf.
