Reno, NV – Andres Romero picked up 14 points on Friday to move into the lead following two rounds of the Reno-Tahoe Open, where the Modified Stableford scoring system is in place.
Romero, who is seeking his first win on the PGA Tour since the 2008 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, sits atop the leaderboard with 22 total points.
Gary Woodland tallied seven points during his second round at Montreux Golf & Country Club to grab second place with 21 points.
Rod Pampling countered a bogey with nine birdies to record 17 points on Friday and jump into a share of third place with 19 points. Pampling is joined by Charlie Wi (15 points) and Stuart Appleby (7 points).
Brian Harman (13 points), Colt Knost (6 points) and Greg Chalmers (5 points) are tied for sixth with 18 total points.
First-round leader Josh Teater had three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey on Friday for a total of zero points in his second round to fall into a group of players tied for 16th at 15 points.
The Modified Stableford scoring system awards eight points for double eagles, five for eagles, two for birdies, zero for pars and subtracts one point for bogeys and three points for double bogey or worse.
Romero entered the day seven points behind the lead, but quickly made up that deficit with four birdies over a five-hole span from the 11th, moving him to 16 points.
He parred his next three holes to remain there before he tripped to a double- bogey 6 at the first.
After steadying himself with a pair of pars at the second and third, Romero closed with a sizzling stretch that included five birdies over his final six holes. His only blemish during that stretch was a bogey at the fifth.
"Today was a really, really good day," said Romero. "I started to play very well then I made some mistakes. And I was kind of frustrated, you know, on the 10th and 11th. But after that, I started again and I finished very well."
Woodland also started on the back nine and he opened his second round with four straight pars before posting back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th.
He then slipped to bogeys at Nos. 17, 1 and 2 to fall back to 15 points, but bounced back with three straight birdies from the fifth to pull within a point of the lead.
He could not move ahead, though, as he parred his final two holes to remain at 21 points.
"You're going to have to make birdies," Woodland said. "Obviously anytime somebody can make an eagle or double eagle real quick, obviously the scores change quickly. I know you'll have to make a lot of birdies and hopefully we're on top at the end."
NOTES: Romero, who is from Argentina, is trying to become the first international champion of this event, which started in 1999 ... Woodland is also seeking his second win on the PGA Tour. His only victory came at the 2011 Transitions Championship ... The cut line fell at 6 points, with 70 players advancing to the weekend. Among those to miss the cut was last year's winner, J.J. Henry ... This tournament used the Modified Stableford scoring format last year for the first time. It was the first PGA Tour event to use the format since The International in 2006.
