Mets, Marlins close out series in Miami

New York phenom Matt Harvey makes his third start of the season against the Miami Marlins on Thursday afternoon, when the Mets visit Marlins Park with the chance to win the four-game series in its finale.

The Mets won the first two games on Monday and Tuesday, but the hosts earned a victory on Wednesday when Henderson Alvarez threw 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball and Jake Marisnick hit the first home run of his career in a 3-2 victory.

Alvarez (2-1) gave up two runs on six hits and two walks in his outing. The 23-year-old right-hander has allowed just two runs on 14 hits over his last three starts. He also contributed with the bat, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Placido Polanco and Giancarlo Stanton drove in a run apiece for the Marlins.

Ike Davis went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Mets, who saw starter Jenrry Mejia (1-1) surrender all three runs on six hits and one walk in six frames.

Harvey, who turned 24 in May, got no-decisions in both previous 2013 outings against Miami.

He was touched for 10 hits and four runs at Marlins Park on June 2 - in a game the Mets lost, 11-6 - then pitched seven innings of one-run ball in another New York loss, 2-1, on June 8 at Citi Field.

Harvey has made eight starts since that pair of games and has won three of five decisions, including a 5-0 defeat of Philadelphia on July 21 in which he went seven innings, surrendered three hits and struck out 10 batters.

Harvey got yet another no-decision from his most recent start on July 26 at Washington, going eight innings and allowing one run in a game the Mets lost, 2-1.

For the Marlins, Bronx-born righty Tom Koehler faces the Mets for the sixth time in his 27th big-league appearance.

The 27-year-old got no verdict from his last meeting with New York on June 9 at Citi Field, after allowing four runs in seven innings of a game the Marlins won, 8-4.

He's 2-2 in six starts since, dropping a 7-4 decision to Pittsburgh on July 27 after allowing five runs on nine hits in five innings of work.

Koehler is 0-4 in seven appearances at Marlins Park this season, with a 5.97 earned run average and 32 hits allowed in 31 2/3 innings.

The Mets entered the week with an eight-game lead in the overall series between the teams, 169-161. The Marlins won eight of the first 11 games in 2013, however, including five in a row from May 31 to June 9.
