The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled pitcher Zeke Spruill to make his first major league start in Thursday's interleague makeup game against the Texas Rangers.

Spruill pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief over four appearances for the Diamondbacks during a call-up in June. The 23-year-old right-hander posted a 4-3 record with a 3.24 ERA in 12 starts for Reno this season.

The Diamondbacks also placed catcher Miguel Montero on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain, selected the contract of catcher Tuffy Gosewisch from Reno and optioned pitcher Chaz Roe to the Triple-A club.

Montero is batting .228 with nine homers and 34 RBI through 92 games this year.
