The Atlanta Braves recalled pitcher Alex Wood for Thursday's start against the New York Mets.

The move had been anticipated since Monday, but Tim Hudson has been placed on the 15-day disabled list to open a roster spot instead of pitcher Paul Maholm.

Atlanta had announced that Maholm would go on the DL with a left wrist contusion, but Hudson's gruesome injury from Wednesday allowed the Braves to keep Maholm on the active roster for now.

Hudson will likely miss the remainder of the season with a broken ankle he sustained while covering first base in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game against the Mets. He raced to the bag to accept a throw from first baseman Freddie Freeman and had his ankle stepped on by New York's Eric Young.

The Braves said Hudson will have surgery in Atlanta when swelling to the ankle goes down.

Maholm, meanwhile, left his previous start last Saturday against the White Sox with the wrist injury.
