Umag, Croatia – Albert Montanes of Spain upset top-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the second round of the Croatian Open.
Montanes beat Gasquet by a 6-4, 6-4 margin to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
Gasquet came into the match with a 5-0 lifetime record against Montanes. The 27-year-old Gasquet was playing in his first tournament since losing in the third round at Wimbledon.
Montanes will next face Frenchman Gael Monfils, who defeated Blaz Kavcic by a 6-3, 6-1 score.
Italian No. 3 seed Fabio Fognini extended his winning streak to 11 matches with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands.
Fognini remains hot after winning his second ATP World Tour title in as many weeks on Sunday at Hamburg.
He will next do battle with sixth-seeded Slovakian Martin Klizan, who outlasted Argentinian Leonardo Mayer 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).
