USA SWIMMING MAKES A SPLASH AT WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
The U.S. collected a flurry of medals at the 2013 World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. Michael Weiss (Reno, Nev.) broke the event record with a time of 4:12:00 to win gold in the men's 400-meter individual medley, while Jack Conger (Rockville, Md.) captured gold in the men's 200 backstroke in 1:55.47 and Ashley Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.) earned the gold medal in the women's 10-kilometer open water race in 2:05:31.9.
ARCHERY
At the 2013 Archery World Cup, held July 18-21 in Medellin, Colombia, Miranda Leek (Des Moines, Iowa) claimed silver in women's individual recurve, while the U.S. secured bronze in both men's and women's team recurve.
BADMINTON
In its opening match against Chile at the 2013 Junior Pan American Championships - held July 21-28 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Team USA won all six events. In singles, Christine Yang (Palo Alto, Calif.) handily defeated Maignacia Henriquez, 21-7, 21-3, while Alan Shekhtman (Waban, Mass.) notched a 21-8, 21-5 victory over Ivan Leon. In doubles, Aston Khor (Irving, Texas) and Cherie Chow (San Marino, Calif.) dominated Bastian Lizama and Paula Lillo, 21-8, 21-6, in the mixed competition, while Anna Tang (Fremont, Calif.) and Alena Wang (Rockville, Md.) won a 21-14, 21-19 decision against Henriquez and Lillo in women's action and William Cheung (Fremont, Calif.) and Kenneth Hui (Rosemead, Calif.) came out with a 21-14, 21-19 win against Leon and Lizama in men's play.
BASEBALL
The U.S. Collegiate National Team sealed a series victory with a 1-0 win over Cuba in the 2013 USA-Cuba Friendship Series, held July 18-23 in Omaha, Neb. The U.S. defeated Cuba, 2-1, in the opening game and notched a 3-2 win in the 10th inning of the second game. With a 3-0 record against Cuba, the U.S. will look to close out games four and five of the series in Cary, N.C.
BASKETBALL
The U.S. women earned their third consecutive gold medal with a convincing 90-71 victory over Russia at the 2013 World University Games, held July 6-15 in Kazan, Russia. Led by Bria Hartley's (North Babylon, N.Y.) game-high 17 points, the U.S. never trailed en route to its perfect 6-0 record. On the men's side, the U.S finished ninth with a 97-70 win against Finland.
The U.S. women opened with three wins to advance to the second round of the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship, held July 18-28 in Klaipeda and Panevezys, Lithuania. The Americans beat Lithuania (113-47), China (103-56) and Mali (103-26), and defeated the Netherlands, 102-42.
CANOE/KAYAK
Zach Lokken (Durango, Colo.) captured a ninth-place finish in U23 men's canoe at the 2013 Junior Slalom World Championships, held July 17-21 in Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia. Lokken and Tyler Hinton (Denver, Colo.) placed 10th in the U23 men's canoe team competition, while the trio of Elliot Bertrand (New York, N.Y), Gabe Machado (Louisville, Colo.) and Bryant Lord (Longmont, Colo.) finished 17th in the junior men's canoe team event.
CYCLING
With a time of 1:35:00, Lea Davison (Jericho, Vt.) was crowned champion of the elite women's 2013 USA Cycling Cross-Country Mountain Bike National Championships, held July 18-21 in Macungie, Pa. On the men's end, Stephen Ettinger (Bozeman, Mont.) claimed the elite men's title in 1:35:17.
As the top U.S. rider, Andrew Talansky (Napa, Calif.) earned a 10th-place finish in 17:39 at the 2013 Tour de France, held June 29-July 21 in Corsica, France. Fellow American Teejay Van Garderen (Bozeman, Mont.) finished 45th as the final stage concluded.
Kristin McGrath (Durango, Colo.) claimed the women's yellow jersey and secured the overall win in a time of 9:48:13 at the 2013 Cascade Cycling Classic, held July 16-21 in Bend, Ore. As the top American men's finisher, Joey Rosskopf (Athens, Ga.) clinched second place in 10:50:42.
DIVING
Amanda Burke (Southampton, Pa.) and Samantha Pickens (Murrysville, Pa.) finished seventh in the women's synchronized 3-meter with 284.64 points at the 2013 FINA World Championships, held July 19-Aug. 4 in Barcelona, Spain. Scoring 263 points, Deirdre Freeman (Grinnell, Iowa) clinched a spot in the women's 1- meter. Meanwhile, David Bonuchi (Columbia, Mo.) and Toby Stanley (Conway, Ark.) finished 10th in the men's synchronized 10-meter with 372.84 points.
EQUESTRIAN
Aboard Sjapoer, Ayden Uhlir (Kirkland, Wash.) collected the gold medal with a 71.605 percent in the Young Rider dressage event at the 2013 Adequan/FEI North American Junior & Young Rider Championships, held July 17-21 in Lexington, Ky. In the young rider jumping event, Lily Keenan (New York, N.Y.) and Londinium claimed the gold medal with eight total faults, while Caroline Martin (Miami Beach, Fla.) and Quantam Solace garnered the gold medal in young rider eventing with 52.2 penalties.
ROLLER SPORTS
The U.S. women secured the gold medal with a 2-1 victory over Canada at the 2013 FIRS Inline World Hockey Championships, held July 8-21 in Huntington Beach, Calif. The U.S. junior women also garnered the gold medal upon defeating Canada, 3-2. Meanwhile, the U.S. junior men captured the silver medal after losing to the Czech Republic, 3-2, in the gold-medal match.
SAILING
Team USA earned five top-10 finishes at the 2013 ISAF Youth World Championships, held July 11-20 in Limassol, Cyprus. As the top U.S. finisher, Marion Leport (Belmont, Calif.) placed fourth overall in the RS:X girls' class, while Haddon Hughes (Houston, Texas) finished fifth in the Laser Radial girls' class. On the boys' side, Wade Waddell (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Henry Fernberger (New York, N.Y.) sailed to a seventh-place finish in the International 420.
SOCCER
The U.S. men advanced to the semifinals with a 5-1 victory against El Salvador on July 21 at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, held July 7-21. Goals from Eddie Johnson (Palm Coast, Fla.) and Landon Donovan (Redlands, Calif.) contributed to the win as the U.S. extended its record winning streak to nine games. On July 16, Team USA defeated Costa Rica, 1-0, to clinch first place in group C and set a U.S. all-time record with eight consecutive wins. The U.S. will face the winner of the Honduras-Costa Rica match on July 24.
SOFTBALL
The U.S. Women's National Team defeated Canada, 7-4, in the first round of the playoffs before losing to Japan, 5-0, at the 2013 Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship, held July 16-22 in Surrey, British Columbia. Team USA improved its record to 6-1 with wins over Australia, Canada, Japan and Venezuela. However, Australia defeated team USA, 2-1 to advance to the championship game against Japan.
SQUASH
The U.S. defeated France, 3-0, in the first round of girls' group play at the 2013 World Junior Championships, held July 15-27 in Wroclaw, Poland. Wins included Maria Elena Ubina's (Greenwich, Ct.) 11-5, 11-9, 11-5 victory over France's Laura Gamblin and Olivia Fiechter's (Philadelphia, Pa.) 11-2, 11-5, 11-4 win over Oceane Wadoux. In individual play, Sabrina Sobhy (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) reached the quarterfinal round after defeating England's Nada Elkalaawy, 7-11, 11-2, 11-8, 13-11, but lost to Habiba Mohamed of Egypt, 11-7, 11-7, 11-8. On the men's side, Devin Mclaughlin (Villanova, Pa.) and Edward Columbia (Boston, Mass.) reached the round of 32 with wins over France's August Dussourde and Seigo Masuda of Japan.
SWIMMING
Haley Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.) earned Team USA's first gold medal with a win in the women's 5-kilometer open water race at the 2013 FINA World Championships, held July 20-Aug. 4 in Barcelona, Spain. Anderson finished the race in 56:34.2. On the men's side, Andrew Gemell (Wilmington, Del.) garnered a 13th-place finish in 53:38.7, while Sean Ryan (Chattanooga, Tenn.) placed 22nd in 53:45.9.
SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING
Mary Killman (McKinney, Texas) garnered a 10th-place finish with 87.300 points in solo technical at the 2013 FINA World Championships, held July 20-Aug. 4 in Barcelona, Spain.
TAEKWONDO
Lauren Hamon (Jacksonville, Fla.) advanced to the women's 73 kg. quarterfinals with an overtime win by decision against Aliya Mursalimova of Ukraine at the 2013 WTF World Taekwondo Championships, held July 15-21 in Puebla, Mexico. Looking to advance, Hamon lost to Korea's In-Jong Lee, 7-0. In the 57 kg. division, Nicole Palma (Lake Worth, Fla.) reached the round of 16 with a 6-5 defeat of Canada's Ruxandra Rodgers, before losing to top-seeded Yu Zhou Hou of China, 6-5. On the men's side, Steven Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas) advanced to the quarterfinals of the men's 80 kg. division with a 3-1 victory against Puerto Rico's Juan Sanchez, before losing to Mexico's Rene Lizarraga, 8-5.
TRACK & FIELD
Team USA set world-leading times and clinched one-two finishes in the women's and men's 400-meter relays at the 2013 Herculis Monaco Diamond League Meet, held July 19 in Fontvieille, Monaco. The women's team of Octavious Freeman (Lake Wales, Fla.), Allyson Felix (Santa Clarita, Calif.), English Gardner (Voorhees, N.J.) and Carmelita Jeter (Torrance, Calif.) ran to a meet record and world-leading time of 41.75. On the men's side, Charles Silmon (Waco, Texas), Mike Rodgers (St. Louis, Mo.), Mookie Salaam (Edmond, Okla.) and Justin Gatlin (Woodham, Fla.) crossed the finish line in a meet record and world- leading time of 37.58. Queen Harrison (Richmond, Va.) led a U.S. sweep of the women's 100 hurdles in 12.64, while Christian Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) won the men's triple jump with a mark of 17.30 meters.
TRIATHLON
Gwen Jorgensen (St. Paul, Minn.) captured a sixth-place finish in 58:03 at the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Hamburg, held July 20 in Hamburg, Germany. Fellow American Kaitlin Donner (Melbourne, Fla.) raced her to way to a 14th-place finish in a time of 58:31. On the men's side, Joe Maloy (Wildwood Crest, N.J.) placed 21st in 52:47, while Matt Chrabot (Virginia Beach, Va.)finished 29th in a time of 53:11.
WATER POLO
The U.S. women opened preliminary play with a 12-8 victory over Greece at the 2013 FINA World Championships, held July 21-Aug. 4 in Barcelona, Spain. Led by three goals from Maggie Steffens' (Danville, Calif.), Team USA sealed the win in the final period with four total goals. The U.S. will continue preliminary play when it faces Canada on July 23. On the men's side, the U.S. dropped a 9-7 decision to Croatia and will face South Africa on July 24.
WRESTLING
Team USA won four medals at the 2013 World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. After winning her first three matches, Brittany Roberts (Santa Fe, Texas) captured the silver medal in the 72 kg. division upon losing to Ekatarina Bukina of Russia, 7-0, in the final. Meanwhile, David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio) captured the bronze medal in the men's 74 kg. freestyle division with a 10-3 victory over Mongolia's Gombodorj Dorjvaanching, and Tyrell Fortune (Portland, Ore.) secured the bronze medal in the men's 120 kg. freestyle division.
