- New York Mets outfielder Juan Lagares has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending July 21.
In only three games following the All-Star break, Lagares led the majors with a .700 batting average, placed second in slugging percentage league-wide (1.200) and ranked third in total bases (12). For his efforts, the 24-year- old's average rose from .234 to .265.
It is the first career award for the native of the Dominican Republic.
Others considered for the award were Lagares' teammate and pitcher Matt Harvey, Dodgers infielder Hanley Ramirez and Washington pitcher Gio Gonzalez.
