Cubs ship Garza to Rangers

Arlington, TX – The Texas Rangers put an end to recent speculation on Monday, acquiring starting pitcher Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs.

The 29-year-old will head to the AL West club for a package which includes infielder Mike Olt, pitchers C.J. Edwards and Justin Grimm, along with a player to be named later. The deal is contingent upon all players involved passing physicals.

Garza, who missed the start of the season due to a strained left lat, has gone 6-1 with a 3.17 earned run average in 11 starts this season, his third with Chicago. He is expected to join the Rangers on Tuesday.

Olt has struggled with Triple-A Round Rock this season, hitting just .213 with 11 home runs and 332 RBI. That comes on the heels of a 28-homer, 82-RBI 2012 campaign with Double-A Frisco.

Edwards had gone 8-2 with a 1.83 earned-run average at Class-A Hickory, compiling 122 strikeouts over 93 1/3 innings.

Grimm was 7-7 with a 6.37 ERA in 17 starts for Texas but experienced right forearm soreness after his last start on July 12 against the Tigers.

Garza had been scratched from his scheduled start earlier in the day as trade rumors began to swirl. The Cubs were in Arizona's capital to kick off a four-game series with the Diamondbacks.

Chris Rusin has been slotted into Garza's place, recalled from Triple-A Iowa.
