GULLANE, Scotland – Hideki Matsuyama is the second player this year to get a one-shot penalty for slow play in a major.
Matsuyama received a warning after taking too much time over a putt on the 15th hole Saturday in the British Open. With his group still out of position, the Japanese star took over two minutes for his second shot into the par-5 17th hole and received a one-shot penalty.
That turned his par into a bogey. Matsuyama wound up with a 72 and was at 3-over 216, still very much in the mix.
At the Masters this year, 14-year-old Guan Tianlang was penalized one shot in the second round. He still became the youngest player to make the cut in a major.
