Brewers begin second half with shutout of Marlins

Milwaukee, WI – Carlos Gomez and Juan Francisco each homered to back a strong performance from Kyle Lohse, and the Milwaukee Brewers earned a 2-0 victory over the Miami Marlins Friday at Miller Park.

The Brewers had only five hits, but two of them reached the seats to provide Lohse (6-7) with all the support he would need.

The right-hander spun six scoreless innings of five-hit ball while striking out five. John Axford, Jim Henderson and Francisco Rodriguez each fired a scoreless frame as well, with the latter picking up his 10th save.

"Its always nice to have a two-run lead, especially when you go into the late innings," said Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke.

Ryan Braun returned to the Milwaukee lineup after playing in just one of his team's last 32 games. However, he went 0-for-3 and was replaced in left field to start the seventh inning.

Jacob Turner (3-2) surrendered both homers and allowed five hits and four walks over five innings for the Marlins, who ended the first half by winning 19 of their last 33 games. Adeiny Hechavarria went 3-for-3 in the setback.

"Very happy once again with the way we pitched," said Miami manager Mike Redmond. "Turner had to grind, but at the end of the day he did a nice job. They got the big hits and we didn't."

Francisco ended the scoreless tie by leading off the fourth inning with a solo home run to left center. The Brewers had a chance to tack on more in the frame, but Jean Segura grounded out to end the inning and strand a pair of runners.

Gomez doubled Milwaukee's edge in the fifth with his 15th home run of the season, a laser that just stayed inside the left-field foul pole.

The Marlins didn't record their first -- and only -- extra-base hit until the sixth, when Logan Morrison reached with a two-out double. However, Marcell Ozuna left him at second by flying out to end the inning.

Miami was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and managed just a single hit against the Brewers' bullpen.

Game Notes

Turner has allowed two runs or fewer in seven of his nine starts since being called up on May 31 ... Segura, Jonathan Lucroy and Jeff Bianchi had the only other hits for Milwaukee ... Segura swiped two bags and now has 29 stolen bases on the season.
