Irving, TX – Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent announced his retirement on Thursday, ending his short, tumultuous NFL career that will be more known for his off-the-field issues.
Brent is still awaiting trial on the intoxication manslaughter allegations, as well as a driving while intoxicated charge, stemming from the Dec. 8, 2012, crash that killed teammate and good friend Jerry Brown, who was on the Cowboys' practice squad at the time.
"This is the right decision for me, and something that I have given a lot of thought to," said Brent in a statement through the Cowboys. "I am at a point where my main focus is all about getting the priorities in my life in order. Those priorities are more important than football. Doing the right things in life are more important than football. I love the game very much. I love my teammates, but this is the right thing for me to do."
Brent started five games in place of an injured Jay Ratliff at nose tackle last season and recorded 22 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks over 12 overall contests in 2012.
He played three seasons for the Cowboys, recording 44 tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and one forced fumble in 39 career games. He was originally selected in the seventh round of the 2010 Supplemental Draft out of Illinois.
