Bad Gastein, Austria – Second-seeded German Annika Beck and former runner-up and heavy Austrian crowd favorite Yvonne Meusburger were among Thursday's second-round winners at the Gastein Ladies tennis event.
Beck came from behind to beat Luxembourg's Mandy Minella 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Meusburger ousted third-seeded Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu 6-3, 6-3 on the red clay at Hotel Europaischerhof.
Meusburger was last week's runner-up in Budapest and was a runner-up here in Bad Gastein back in 2007.
Another Day 4 upset came when Ukrainian Elina Svitolina upended sixth-seeded South African Chanelle Scheepers 7-5, 1-6, 6-1.
Two other results saw Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus overcome Estrella Cabeza Candela 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 and Austrian wild card Patricia Mayr-Achleitner handle Croat Petra Martic 6-4, 6-4. Mayr-Achleitner was the runner-up here two years ago. Rus has now won two straight matches after putting together a WTA record-tying 17-match losing streak.
Friday's quarterfinals will pit Beck against eighth-seeded Italian Karin Knapp, Austrian wild card Lisa-Maria Moser versus Czech Andrea Hlavackova, Mayr-Achleitner against Svitolina, and Rus versus Meusburger. Three of the eight quarterfinalists hail from the host nation, Austria.
The winner of this $235,000 tournament will earn $42,000.
