HURSEY WINS FIRST WORLD CUP TITLE
Katie Hursey (Hampstead, Md.) sped to the finish line to earn a time of 2:01:19 and her first world cup title at the 2013 Palamos ITU World Cup, held July 13 in Palamos, Spain. Erin Jones (Hood River, Ore.) finished sixth with a time 2:02:56, while Greg Billington (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was the top U.S. male finisher in 15th place.
ARCHERY
In a close match, Brady Ellison (Glendale, Ariz.) outshot London 2012 teammate Jacob Wukie (Oak Harbor, Ohio) to clinch the gold medal in men's recurve at the U.S. Open on July 13 in Hamilton, Ohio. On the women's side, Miranda Leek (Des Moines, Iowa) and Khatuna Lorig (West Hollywood, Calif.) earned the silver and bronze medals.
BADMINTON
Team USA placed 17th at the World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. On the first day of competition, the team of Sharon Ng (Sunnyvale, Calif.), Danae Long (Fremont, Calif.), Michael Julian Buasan (San Francisco, Calif.) and Randy Ma (Cupertino, Calif.) fell to Germany and Japan by identical 5-0 scores before ending the day with a 4-1 win over Macau. The team concluded play on the second day with a 3-1 loss to Ukraine in the quarterfinals.
BASKETBALL
The women's team secured a 79-78 victory over Australia and a spot in the final at the World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. With wins over Mali, Czech Republic and Brazil in the preliminary round and a 103-72 win over Sweden in the quarterfinals, the team remains undefeated and will play Russia for gold today (July 15). The men started with a win over Sweden, followed by losses to Australia and Canada in the preliminary round. After 91-51 and 92-70 wins over Norway and Germany in the classification round, the U.S. will fight for a ninth-place finish on July 16.
CYCLING
Todd Wells (Durango, Colo.) earned the gold medal with a time of 1:39:34.8 in the men's cross-country race at the Subaru Cup, held July 13 in Mt. Morris, Wis. Stephen Ettinger (Boulder, Colo.) finished closely behind in 1:40:48.7 to take silver. For the women, Lea Davison (Jericho, Vt.) won gold in 1:35:22.1 and Katerina Nash (Truckee, Calif.) placed second in 1:35:31.3.
Andrew Talanksy (Napa, Calif.) raced his way to 13th place after stage 15 at the 2012 Tour de France, held June 29-July 21 in Corsica, France. Meanwhile, Tejay Van Garderen (Bozeman, Mont.) moved to 47th place with six stages remaining.
DIVING
The U.S. women earned the silver medal in the overall team competition as diving events concluded at the World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. Meghan Houston (Austin, Texas) and Laura Ryan (Elk River, Minn.) enhanced the team's score by taking bronze in women's synchronized 3-meter springboard. Meanwhile, Sam Dorman (Tempe, Ariz.) and Zac Nees (Hatfield, Pa.) captured a fourth-place finish in synchronized 3-meter springboard to help the men earn a fifth-place finish overall.
FENCING
The women's saber team led the U.S. with a fourth-place finish, after beating Japan and Ukraine and then falling to Italy and Russia at the World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. The women's epee team finished fifth after a 45-19 loss to Poland in the quarterfinals. After falling in the opening round to Japan, the men's epee team captured a ninth-place finish. Madison Zeiss (Notre Dame, Ind.) and Alen Hadzic (New York, N.Y.) finished 10th in women's foil and men's epee.
GYMNASTICS
Danell Leyva (Miami, Fla.) earned the highest senior all-around score with 87.000 points at the 2013 Men's National Qualifier, held July 13-14 in Colorado Springs, Colo. He posted the top scores on parallel bars (15.500) and horizontal bar (15.850). In addition to 13 senior athletes, Leyva qualified to compete at the P&G Gymnastics Championships.
GOALBALL
The women's team captured the gold medal after defeating Brazil, 2-0, at the Parapan American Championships, held July 8-15 in Colorado Springs, Colo. On the men's side, the U.S. silver captured the silver medal after falling to Canada, 8-6.
The male youth team took silver after falling, 8-5, to Japan in the final at the IBSA World Youth Championships, held July 8-15 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The youth female team captured the bronze medal after beating Australia, 3-2.
JUDO
Hannah Martin (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) took bronze in the 63 kg. division at the IJF Grand Prix, held July 13-14 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Martin won her first match against Saranzul Amgalan of Mongolia, but then lost the second to Jeyoung You of South Korea, before defeating Mongolia's Battugs Tumen-Od for third place.
Sophia Swain (San Jose, Calif.) captured gold in 70 kg. to lead Team USA's five-medal count at the Junior Pan American Championships, held July 11-14 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Fellow American Summer Truong (Colorado Springs, Colo.) seized silver, while Mackenzie Williams (El Lago, Texas), L.A. Smith (Rahway, N.J.) and Tyler Yonemori (Wakefield, Mass.) took bronze.
Team USA took home two gold medals at the IBSA Parapan American Games, held July 11-14 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Myles Porter (Freemont, Ohio) captured the first medal in the 100 kg. category, while Adnan Gutic took the second in -81 kg. Dartanyon Crockett (Cleveland, Ohio) and Steve Mulhern (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished the team's four-medal count with silver and bronze.
Sara Luna (Chicago, Ill.) led Team USA with a silver medal at 70kg. at the International Championships for the Blind and Visually Impaired, held July 13-14 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The team ended the tournament with a total of seven medals, six of which were bronze.
ROWING
As the lone rowing team representing the U.S., the men's eight captured sixth place with a time of 6:09.91 at the World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia.
RUGBY
The U.S. defeated Italy, 17-14, in its second match at the World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. The team opened competition earlier in the day with a 12-5 loss to Brazil. China routed Team USA, 24-0 on Monday.
The U.S. defeated South Africa, 44-5, in the second game at the U20 Nations Cup, held July 11-21 in Nottingham, England. In the opening game, the U.S. fell to Canada, 25-15.
SHOOTING
Emil Milev (Temple Terrace, Fla.) secured the bronze medal in men's 25-meter rapid fire pistol at the ISSF Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun World Cup, held July 3-12 in Granada, Spain. In the same event, teammate Keith Sanderson captured a sixth- place finish. Will Brown (Twin Falls, Idaho) placed 10th in men's 10-meter air pistol. On the women's end, Morgan Craft (Muncy Valley, Pa.) finished 10th in skeet.
SOCCER
The U.S. defeated Cuba, 4-1, in its second game of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup on July 13 in Sandy, Utah. The team sealed a spot in the quarterfinals after it first beat Belize, 6-1, on July 9 in Portland, Ore. The two victories of the series extended the team's winning streak to seven, and tied it with the longest in team history.
SOFTBALL
Team USA earned the silver medal at the General Tire World Cup of Softball XIII, held July 11-14 in Oklahoma City, Okla. Despite a valiant effort, the team lost to Japan, 6-3, in the gold-medal game. Previously, the U.S. beat Canada, 7-0, and Australia, 4-0, but then lost to Japan, 7-4. On the final day of competition, the U.S. defeated Puerto Rico, 10-3, before facing Japan for the title.
SWIMMING
Sean Ryan (Chattanooga, Tenn.) won the gold medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. Laura Sogar (Exeter, R.I.) and Megan Romano (St. Petersburg, Fla.) also medaled, claiming bronze in the 100 breaststroke and100 freestyle.
SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING
The U.S. took home the silver medal with a score of 172.8000 at the 2013 U.S. Open Synchronized Swimming Championships, held July 9-13 in Irving, Texas.
The U.S. captured the bronze medal in the team event and a fourth-place finish in duet at the World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. Meanwhile, Olympian Mary Killman (McKinney, Texas) finished fourth in free solo with a score of 87.710.
TRACK & FIELD
Ky Westbrook (Chandler, Ariz.) captured two gold medals, helping the U.S. place first at the IAAF World Youth Championships, held July 10-14 in Donetsk, Ukraine. Westbrook won the 100-meter in 11.33 seconds, then joined teammates Dior Hall (Denver, Colo.), Raevyn Rogers (Houston, Texas) and Olivia Baker (South Orange, N.J.) to win the medley relay in a time of 2:05.15. In total, Team USA took home 17 medals (two golds, seven silvers and eight bronzes).
VOLLEYBALL
Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) claimed the bronze medal at the FIVB Grand Slam, held July 9-14 in Gstaad, Switzerland. The duo secured the medal with a 21-18, 21-18 victory over Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of the Netherlands. Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) took eighth place. On the women's side, Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Hermosa Beach) finished seventh, while Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) and Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) finished eighth.
The U.S. Women's National Team defeated Japan, 25-15, 25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 15-10, in the final game of the inaugural USA Volleyball Cup on July 13 in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. The team swept the three-match series, winning the opening match, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-23, on July 10 in San Diego and the second, 25-17, 26-24, 18-25, 25-20, on July 12 in Long Beach, Calif.
The U.S. men concluded 2013 FIVB World League pool play with a pair of losses to Brazil on July 13-14 in Rio de Janeiro. The team finished with a 4-6 record to place fifth in pool A.
Sara Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kelly Claes (Valencia, Calif.) claimed the bronze medal at the FIVB U19 World Championships, held July 10-14 in Porto, Portugal. The pair's 18-21, 21-19, 12-15 victory over Sarah Schneider and Lara Schreiber of Germany earned the team a record of 6-2. The men's team of Torey DeFalco (Huntington Beach, Calif.), and Lucas Yoder (San Clemente, Calif.) also captured the bronze medal with a 22-24, 21-18, 15-8 victory over Lithuania's Lukas Kazdailis and Arnas Rumsevicius, finishing with a 6-1 record.
The beach volleyball team of Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii) finished fifth at the World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. The pair swept the preliminary and playoff rounds and then fell to Thailand in the quarterfinals before overcoming Belarus, 21-17, 21-10, and Canada, 21-17, 24-22, to finish the competition. The women's team of Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Emily Stockman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also remained undefeated in the preliminary and playoff rounds. After losing to one German team, the pair regrouped and defeated another German team, before finishing sixth with a 14-21, 19-21 loss to Russia.
WEIGHTLIFTING
Ian Wilson (Berkeley, Calif.) placed 11th overall with a personal best of 355 kg. in 105 kg. category at the World University Games held, July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. Kollin Cockrell (Shreveport, La.) placed 16th with a total of 323 kg. in 105 kg. On the women's side, Megan Kranz (Oviedo, Fla.) finished 14th in 63 kg. with a total of 178 kg., while Sylvia Hoffman (Arlington, Texas) placed 17th in 69 kg. with 173 kg.
WRESTLING
Chris Pendleton (Fort Riley, Kan.) earned a victory for the U.S. at the Keep Olympic Wrestling Dual, held July 13 in Colorado Springs, Colo., defeating Kazakhstan's Yeraly Abdrashev, 8-0, at 96 kg.
Elena Pirozhkova (Greenfield, Mass.) claimed one of two gold medals for the U.S. at the 2013 Grand Prix of Spain, held July 13 in Madrid, Spain. She defeated Jackeline Castillo Renteria of Colombia to take the 63 kg. championship title. Meanwhile, Alyssa Lampe (Tomahawk, Wis.) clinched the second gold medal, overcoming Venezuela's Mayelis Castillo Caripa at 48 kg.
Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.) earned the silver medal at 59 kg. at the World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. Ragan won her first three matches before losing, 7-0, to Ukraine's Yuliya Ratkevich.
