James Duckworth and Alejandro Falla knocked off the only seeded players in action Tuesday in the first round of the inaugural Colombia Open tennis event.
Duckworth took down seventh-seeded Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia, 6-3, 6-4, while Falla, a native of Cali, Colombia, defeated eighth-seeded Xavier Malisse of Belgium, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, on the hardcourts at Centro de Alto Rendimiento.
Also advancing Tuesday were Canadian Vasek Pospisil, Belgian Ruben Bemelmans, Dominican qualifier Victor Estrella Burgos, 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic, Aussie qualifier Chris Guccione and Ecuadorian qualifier Emilio Gomez. Bemelmans is rewarded with a second-round match against top seed Janko Tipsarevic.
The winner of this $638,000 tournament will collect $115,200. The former Los Angeles event moved to Bogota this year.
