Flushing, NY – The already short-handed New York Yankees saw their lone position All-Star, Robinson Cano, exit the Midsummer Classic after taking a Matt Harvey fastball off his right leg.
Cano, the only constant in New York's injury-riddled lineup throughout the season, had a 96 m.p.h. fastball carom just above his right knee in the first inning of Tuesday's All-Star Game. He stayed on his feet and eventually went to first after a brief discussion with a trainer.
However, after a Miguel Cabrera strikeout, Cano gingerly walked off the field under his own power, and Dustin Pedroia replaced him on the basepaths.
X-Rays taken of Cano's knee came back negative, and he was diagnosed with a right quad contusion.
"I didn't want to aggravate it," Cano said. "You just want to be out of the game and put it on ice the next two days. ... You don't want to make that worse."
Cano hit .302 with 21 home runs and 65 RBI while playing all 95 games for the fourth-place Yankees prior to the break.
