Second-seeded Annika Beck was an opening-round winner, while fourth-seeded Andrea Petkovic was sent packing at the Gastein Ladies tennis event.
The German Beck got past Israeli veteran Shahar Peer 7-5, 6-3, while Croat Petra Martic upended the German Petkovic 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-3 on the red clay at Hotel Europaischerhof. Petkovic titled here back in 2009.
In other first-round action involving seeds, Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic ousted No. 5 Kiki Bertens, of The Netherlands, 6-2, 6-2 and No. 6 South African Chanelle Scheepers handled Slovak Anna Schmiedlova 6-1, 6-4.
Several other women reached the second round, including Romanian Alexandra Cadantu, Luxembourg's Mandy Minella, and Austrian wild card and 2011 Bad Gastein runner-up Patricia Mayr-Achleitner.
The winner of this $235,000 tournament will earn $42,000.
