Philadelphia, PA – EUROPEAN TOUR - BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP, Muirfield, Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland - Golf's best will be on hand at Muirfield this week for the 142nd British Open.
Last year, Adam Scott held a 4-shot lead with four holes to play and bogeyed them all, allowing Ernie Els to steal the claret jug at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.
In regards to his title defense, Els has an added advantage this week, as he was victorious the last time Muirfield hosted the British Open in 2002.
Scott rebounded from that potentially devastating collapse in April, winning the Masters over Angel Cabrera in a playoff.
Tiger Woods will return from an elbow injury that has kept him out since the U.S. Open. He is seeking his first Open Championship victory since 2006 and first win in any major since 2008, at the U.S. Open.
Phil Mickelson will enter this year's tournament with momentum after downing Branden Grace in a playoff at the Scottish Open last week.
U.S. Open winner Justin Rose is also in the field.
ESPN will have coverage of all four rounds.
The European Tour heads east next week for the inaugural Russian Masters.
PGA TOUR
SANDERSON FARMS CHAMPIONSHIP, Annandale GC, Madison, Mississippi - Playing opposite the British Open this week is the Sanderson Farms Championship on the PGA Tour.
Last year, Scott Stallings fired a 4-under 68 during his final round to hold off Jason Bohn and capture the title. Stallings finished at 24-under-par 264 -- a tournament record.
Stallings will not be on hand to defend his title, as he will be teeing it up at the Open Championship in Scotland.
The Golf Channel will have coverage of all four rounds.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads north of the border for the Canadian Open, which Scott Piercy won last year.
LPGA TOUR
MARATHON CLASSIC, Highland Meadows Golf Club, Sylvania, Ohio - So Yeon Ryu will look to defend her title this week on the LPGA Tour at the Marathon Classic.
Last year, Ryu poured in six straight birdies during the final round en route to a 7-shot victory. She fired a final-round 9-under 62 and finished at 20- under-par 264.
Inbee Park will look to get back in the winner's circle after her streak of three consecutive LPGA Tour wins was broken by Hee Young Park at last week's LPGA Classic.
Golf Channel will have coverage of all four rounds.
The LPGA Tour is off next week before opening August at the Women's British Open, where Jiyai Shin won last year.
WEB.COM TOUR
MIDWEST CLASSIC, Nicklaus GC at LionsGate, Overland Park, Kansas - The Web.com Tour heads to Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate this week for the Midwest Classic.
Last year, Shawn Stefani fired a 7-under 64 in the final round to earn a 2- stroke win and his first title on the Web.com Tour. Stefani began the day in a tie for 13th place, four shots off the lead. But he turned in a flawless round, carding seven birdies -- including five on the back nine. That put him at 17-under-par 267, and nobody else matched the score.
Stefani will not be on hand, as he will be competing in the Sanderson Farms Championship on the PGA Tour.
There will be no television coverage this week.
The Web.com Tour heads to Idaho next week for the Boise Open, which Luke Guthrie won a year ago.
PGA TOUR CANADA
THE PLAYERS CUP, Pine Ridge Golf Club, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada - The PGA Tour Canada is in Winnipeg this week for the Players Cup.
Last year, Chris Killmer parred the fourth playoff hole to defeat Vince Covello and earn his first victory on tour.
Killmer will be back on hand to defend his title.
There will be no television coverage this week.
The PGA Tour Canada is off until Aug. 6, when it stages the ATB Financial Classic, which Michael Gligic won last year.
