Larsson advances on home soil in Sweden

Sweden's Johanna Larsson was one of two seeded winners Monday at the $235,000 Swedish Open tennis event.

The eight seed and 2011 Bastad runner-up whipped fellow Swede Sofia Arvidsson 6-1, 6-1 on the red clay at Bastad Tennis Stadium, where Argentine Carlos Berlocq beat Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the final in last week's men's edition of the Swedish Open.

In other Day-1 action involving seeds, No. 5 Lourdes Dominguez Lino whipped fellow Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-1, 6-2 and France's Virginie Razzano upended No. 7 Silvia Soler-Espinosa of Spain 7-5, 6-1.

Also on Monday, Italian Flavia Pennetta held off Colombian Mariana Duque- Marino 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 and Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja overcame Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

On Tuesday, top-seeded world No. 1 Serena Williams will meet Kazakhstan's Sesil Karatantcheva. The American great will play her first tennis since losing in the fourth round at Wimbledon two weeks ago.

Two-time reigning champion Polona Hercog is not defending her titles this week. She topped France's Mathilde Johansson in last year's finale.

The 2013 Bastad titlist will claim $40,000.
