Timothy Peters wins NASCAR Trucks Series race at Iowa Speedway

NEWTON, Iowa – Timothy Peters' trophy from his NASCAR Trucks Series victory at Iowa last year sits in a foyer in his house. It's just to the left as you enter. You can't miss it, he said.

After Saturday night's race at Iowa, Peters said he'd have to build in some more space in that foyer for his second Iowa trophy.

Peters claimed the lead after a restart on lap 195 to win the NASCAR Trucks Series race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday night.

The win was Peters' first of the 2013 Trucks season and the sixth of his career. He also became first Trucks driver to win twice at Iowa, edging out 17-year-old Erik Jones by .225 seconds.

"Our main goal coming here was to fill our bucket up with points," Peters said. "We started off the season this year a little rocky, but we're turning that around."

James Buescher came in third and Ron Hornaday Jr. was fourth.

"I'm happy with our third-place run," Buescher said. "Couple of mistakes bit us at the end . Those late-race restarts can get pretty crazy anyways."

Chase Elliot, another 17-year-old, finished fifth in only his third start in the series.

Pole-sitter German Quiroga Jr. — the first Mexican-born driver to win a pole in the Trucks Series — led the first 56 laps before finishing 14th. Ty Dillon, who led a race-high 57 laps, was 16th.

Quiroga Jr. led from the start until a caution was called on Lap 55 because of debris on the track at Turn 2. Dillon came out of the pits in front of Quiroga, Peters, and Brendan Gaughan.

Dillon held a commanding lead — at one point, he led then-second-place Peters by 1.761 seconds — until the race's second caution on lap 112 when Johnny Sauter, who finished 11th, hit the wall and sustained some tire rub.

Peters and defending Trucks Series champion Buescher beat Dillon out of pit road, with Jones and Joey Coulter behind at the restart on lap 118.

But two short laps later, Jeb Burton, sitting sixth at the time, was spun out by Coulter and backed into the wall, calling for the night's third caution. There were a total of six in the race.

Peters briefly grabbed the lead coming out of pit road, but Buescher and Jones passed him to after a three-wide restart on lap 127. Peters then dropped to fifth by lap 133 before making a comeback after the night's fifth restart on lap 174.

"We're going to shine through the summer months," Peters said. "We're going to get that championship that was oh so close last year."

The win moves Peters from 10th to eighth in the Trucks Series standings, 76 points off the lead. Matt Crafton, who finished sixth, remains on top with 357 points.

Burton remained in second with 319 points after a 22nd-place finish. Buescher jumped Dillon for third and now has 317. Dillon sits fourth with 309, and Sauter is fifth with 305.
