Top-three seeds Tomas Berdych, Nicolas Almagro and Juan Monaco were a trio of quarterfinal upset victims Friday at the Swedish Open.
Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker doused the world No. 6 former Wimbledon runner-up Berdych 7-5, 7-5 in 2 hours, 2 minutes on the red clay at Bastad Tennis Stadium. De Bakker broke Berdych four times, while the Czech loser could manage only two breaks on Day 5.
Berdych was a Bastad finalist in 2005 and 2008.
In an all-Spanish affair, eighth-seeded Fernando Verdasco toppled his second- seeded fellow Spaniard Almagro in 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 fashion. Verdasco was a surprise Wimbledon quarterfinalist last week.
Almagro was last year's Bastad runner-up to fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, titled here in 2010, and was also a runner-up in 2007.
Friday's other quarters saw fifth-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov drive out the Argentine star Monaco 6-3, 6-2 and Argentina's Carlos Berlocq hold off Spaniard Albert Ramos 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. Monaco was the 2009 Bastad runner-up.
Saturday's semifinals will pit Dimitrov against Verdasco and de Bakker versus Berlocq.
The winner of this $560,000 event will collect $100,000.
