The Masters trophy Sam Snead won in 1954 after a playoff with Ben Hogan and the claret jug from Snead's only British Open title are going to auction.

They are among 14 lots from the Sam Snead Collection that will be the centerpiece of Heritage Auctions' offering next month in Chicago. The collection also includes the putter Snead used to win the '54 Masters.

Chris Ivy, the director of sports at Heritage Auctions, considers it the most significant golf collection ever offered.

Snead holds the PGA Tour record of 82 wins. Son Jack Snead says the memorabilia has been displayed mainly in Snead's chain of restaurants and The Greenbrier Resort.

Heritage expects the proceeds to be several million dollars. Jack Snead says the money likely will go to charities.
