Mavericks load up on guards, pursuing Bynum for gaping hole at center after Howard rejection

The Dallas Mavericks have loaded up on guards in free agency. They're still chasing what started out as their top priority: a center.

The Mavericks met with Andrew Bynum on Wednesday, the first day free agents could sign. Dallas wanted Dwight Howard, but he chose Houston.

While the Mavericks weigh the risks of adding the 25-year-old Bynum and his bad knees, they await the official signatures from guards Jose Calderon, Devin Harris and Wayne Ellington.

Dallas added two more guards through the draft and the equivalent of another rookie in Gal Mekel, who is set to become the second Israeli-born player in the NBA.

Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson says Dallas needs guards who can get Dirk Nowitzki the ball "where he wants it, when he wants it."
