The Cincinnati Bengals released defensive end Jamaal Anderson Wednesday after one injury-shortened season with the team.

Anderson, a former first-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons, appeared in Cincinnati's first two games of last season before tearing his quadriceps and landing on injured reserve. He had signed a two-year contract with the Bengals in March of 2012.

The 27-year-old was attempting to stick at a deep position for the Bengals, who used their franchise tag to retain Michael Johnson off an 11 1/2-sack 2012 campaign and brought back veteran Robert Geathers. Cincinnati also added SMU end Margus Hunt in the second round of this year's draft.

Anderson has recorded 132 tackles, 7 1/2 sacks and 10 passes defensed over 77 career games with Atlanta, Indianapolis and Cincinnati.
