Stony Brook, NY – Stony Brook All-America offensive lineman Michael Bamiro is eligible to sign an NFL contract as a free agent after the NCAA denied him an extra year of eligibility.
Bamiro had planned to play a fourth season at Stony Brook this fall, but the NCAA recently declared he had exhausted his eligibility.
In 2008, he attended a Pittsburgh junior college which didn't sponsor football and then transferred to Stony Brook in 2009, redshirting that season.
According to NCAA bylaws, Bamiro's full-time attendance at the junior college officially started his five-year clock. Stony Brook had sought a waiver from the NCAA to extend his eligibility.
The 6-foot-8, 335-pound tackle, who graduated in May, was named to The Sports Network FCS All-America first team last season and was tabbed for the preseason squad on July 1.
"We are going to miss Mike on the field and off," Stony Brook coach Chuck Priore said. "He's been a great leader and role model for our program both as a student and athlete. We expect he will have a long and successful playing career and wish him great success as he pursues all his goals after Stony Brook."
Bamiro is scheduled to work out for NFL teams on Thursday.
