Bob Bryan (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla.) and Mike Bryan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) became the first men���s doubles team in the Open-era to hold all four major titles along with an Olympic gold medal after winning the men���s doubles final at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships, held June 29-July 7 in London. The sibling duo earned a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory over to the Croatian/Brazilian pairing of Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo in the final. With the win, the Bryan brothers earned their 15th Grand Slam title and improved their record as the winningest men���s pairing of all time.
U.S. CRUISES TO FIBA GOLD
With a convincing 82-68 victory over Serbia, the U.S. clinched gold at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship, held June 27-July 7 in Prague. Behind Montrezl Harrell's (Tarboro, N.C.) 17 points and four blocked shots, the U.S. outscored Serbia, 42-30, in the second half to claim a perfect 9-0 record. Standout forward Aaron Gordon (San Jose, Calif.) was named MVP of the tournament after averaging U.S. highs of 12.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
BASEBALL
The U.S. lost to Japan, 5-2, in the third game of the 2013 USA-Japan Collegiate International Friendly Series, held July 5-11 in various cities. The U.S. bested Japan, 6-3, in the opening game where the team converted two Japanese errors into three unearned Team USA runs. In the second game, the U.S lost to Japan, 4-0. Team USA. currently trails Japan, 2-1, in the series as it looks to even the score on July 10.
BASKETBALL
The U.S. men cruised to a 95-63 victory over the Czech Republic in the preliminary round at the 2013 World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. The U.S. limited its opponent to 21.3 percent shooting from the field while Doug McDermott (Ames, Iowa) led the team with 23 points and 10 rebounds. In its opening game, the U.S. handily defeated United Arab Emirates, 140-46.
BOWLING
Kayla Johnson (Washington, Ill.) and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (Keller, Texas) earned automatic spots on the 2014 Team USA roster with totals of 3,407 and 3,193 at the 2013 USBC Summer Team USA Trials, held July 5-7 in Arlington, Texas. On the men's side, Geoffrey Young (Denton, Texas) and Nathan Bohr (Wichita, Kan.) grabbed the two automatic berths with scores of 3,418 and 3,415.
CANOE/KAYAK
Fabien Lefevre (Bethesda, Md.) finished fifth with a time of 97.92 in the men's kayak final at the 2013 Slalom World Cup No. 3, held July 5-7 in La Seu d'Urgell, Spain. Lefevre also teamed with Casey Eichfield (Drums, Pa.) and Devin McEwan (Salisbury, Conn.) to finish eighth in the men's canoe team event in 133.74.
CYCLING
Mara Abbott (Boulder, Colo.) rode her way to the overall title at the 2013 Giro d' Italia Internationale Femminile, held June 30-July 7 in Giovinazzo, Italy. Wins in the fifth and sixth stages were crucial to her sealing the pink jersey in a total time of 17:14:34. Teammate Evelyn Stevens (Acton, Mass.) claimed fifth overall.
As the top U.S. rider, Andrew Talanksy (Napa, Calif.) stands in 22nd place overall after stage nine at the 2013 Tour de France, held June 29-July 21 in Corsica, France. Tejay Van Garderen (Bozeman, Mont.) sits in 51st place with two weeks and 11 stages of riding remaining.
Greta Neimanas (Asheville, N.C.) and Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.) captured winner's jerseys with times of 1:51:29 and 1:24:26 in the C5 and C2 races at the 2013 Para-cycling Road National Championships, held July 3-7 in Madison, Wis. Thea Rosa (Sacramento, Calif.) captured the H3 title in 1:26:23. On the men's side, Jonathon Copsey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won the C4 race in 1:36:58, while William Groulx (Portland, Ore.) earned the H1 title in 1:14:32.
DIVING
Laura Ryan (Elk River, Minn.) earned a fifth-place finish in women's platform with 292.00 points at the 2013 World University Games, held July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia. Samantha Pickens (Murrysville, Pa.) also placed fifth with 263.90 points in the women's 1-meter. Meanwhile, Harrison Jones (Spring, Texas) captured an eighth-place finish in the men's 1-meter with 363.85 points.
FENCING
Ryan Estep (Florence, Miss.) earned the silver medal in the men's Category B epee event at the 2013 Wheelchair Fencing World Cup, held July 4-8 in Warsaw, Poland. Fellow American Curtis Lovejoy (College park, Ga.) captured bronze in the men's Category C foil competition.
SHOOTING
Corey Cogdell (Eagle River, Alaska) collected the bronze medal in women's trap at the 2013 ISSF Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun World Cup, held July 3-7 in Granada, Spain. In the same event, Ashley Carroll (Solvang, Calif.) placed fifth, while Sarah Scherer (Woburn, Mass.) secured a sixth-place finish in the women's 10- meter air rifle. On the men's end, Connor Davis (Shelbyville, Ky.) clinched an eighth-place finish in the men's 10-meter air rifle and Daryl Szarenski placed 13th in the men's 50-meter free pistol.
SOCCER
The U.S. Men's National Team routed Guatemala, 6-0, in an international friendly, held July 5 in San Diego. In his first international match in more than 10 months, Landon Donovan (Redlands, Calif.) notched his 50th and 51st international goals as the U.S. extended its unbeaten streak against Guatemala to 20 games. The win improved Team USA's winning streak to five games.
SOFTBALL
The U.S. secured the silver medal at the 2013 ISF Junior Women's World Championship, held July 1-7 in Brampton, Ontario. Led by a stellar performance from pitcher Cheridan Hawkins (Anderson, Calif.), the U.S. topped Japan, 4-0, in the playoffs. A day later, the U.S. lost to Japan, 4-0, in the gold-medal match. The game was called in the top of the seventh inning due to rain. Team USA finished with a 9-1 record that included wins over Australia, Canada, Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Korea, New Zealand and Puerto Rico.
SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING
The U.S. stands in third place after scoring 86.800 points in the team technical preliminary round at the 2013 World University Games, held July 5-9 in Kazan, Russia. The U.S. duo of Olivia Morgan (Lafayette, Calif.) and Rosilyn Tegart (Kamloops, British Columbia) scored 85.600 points and currently sits in fourth place after the duet technical preliminary round. Meanwhile Mary Killman (McKinney, Texas) earned a fourth-place finish after scoring 87.300 points in the solo technical preliminary round.
TABLE TENNIS
Lily Zhang (Palo Alto, Calif.) advanced to the semifinals after overcoming Canada's Zhang Mo, 4-3, at the 2013 U.S. Open Table Tennis Championships, held July 2-6 in Las Vegas. Zhang lost in the semifinals to No. 1 seed Elizabeta Samara of Romania. Ariel Hsing (San Jose, Calif.) advanced to the round of 16 before dropping a 4-1 decision to eventual winner Megumi Abe of Japan. On the men's side, Timothy Wang (Houston, Texas) reached the round of 32 before losing to Masato Shiono of Japan, 4-1.
TRACK & FIELD
The U.S. swept the 100-meter hurdles as Dawn Harper-Nelson (East St. Louis, Ill.) nabbed the top spot in 12.53 at the 2013 Diamond League Series, held July 4 in Lausanne, Switzerland. Kellie Wells (Richmond, Va.) took second in 12.58, while Lolo Jones (Des Moines, Iowa) placed third in 12.60. Francena McCorory (Hampton, Va.) claimed the women's 400 in 50.36 to notch her first international win of the year. Tyson Gay (Lexington, Ky.) ran a 9.79 to win the men's 100, while Ryan Whiting (Harrisburg, Pa.) set a meet record of 21.88 meters in the men's shot put.
Aries Merritt (Atlanta, Ga.) ran a season-best time of 13.09 to win the 110- meter hurdles at the 2013 Diamond League Series, held July 6 in Paris. LaShawn Merritt (Portsmouth, Va.) continued his successful year with a second-place finish in the men's 400 hurdles with a season-best time of 44.09. Michelle Carter (Red Oak, Texas) garnered a second-place finish in the women's shot put with a throw of 19.57 meters, while Brigetta Barrett (Duncanville, Texas) claimed second place in the women's high jump at 1.98 meters.
TRIATHLON
As the top U.S. finisher, Gwen Jorgensen (St. Paul, Minn.) finished 18th in 1:07:34 at the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Kitzbuhel, held July 6 in Kitzbuhel, Austria. Ben Kanute (Geneva, Ill.) made his ITU World Triathlon Series debut with a 14th-place finish by logging a time of 58:46, while Matt Chrabot (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished the course in 59:55 to place 22nd.
VOLLEYBALL
April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitey Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) secured fourth place at the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, held July 1-7 in Stare Jablonki, Poland. The pair topped Austria's Doris Schwaiger and Stefanie Schwaiger, 19-21, 21-19, 15-13, in the quarterfinals and eventually lost to Brazil's Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas, 21-18, 21-15, in the bronze-medal match. On the men's side, U.S. pair Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) tied for ninth after losing to Brazil's Ricardo Santos and Alvaro Filho, 21-18, 21-17, in the round of 16.
The U.S. garnered a 16th-place finish at the FIVB Volleyball Boys' U19 World Championship, held June 29-July 7 in Mexicali, Mexico. The U.S. finished with a 2-6 record, highlighted by a 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-25, 17-15 win against Korea and a 23-25, 25-16, 28-26, 25-17 victory over Algeria.
The U.S. went 0-2 against Poland at the 2013 FIVB World League Final, held July 7 in Wroclaw, Poland. Team USA currently stands at 4-4 in pool play and will look to qualify for the final round when it faces Brazil on July 13-14.
