St. Louis, MO – The St. Louis Cardinals granted veteran infielder Ty Wigginton his unconditional release on Tuesday.
Wigginton hit just .158 with three RBI in 47 games with the Cardinals this season.
St. Louis had signed the former All-Star to a two-year, $5 million deal in December.
A veteran of nine-plus seasons in the majors with the Mets, Pirates, Rays, Astros, Orioles, Rockies, Phillies and Cardinals, Wigginton is a career .261 hitter with 169 homers and 594 RBI.
St. Louis also purchased the contract of catcher Rob Johnson from Triple-A Memphis. He was batting .236 with seven home runs and 32 RBI in 59 games with the minor league club this year.
Johnson owns a career batting average of .201 with eight homers and 62 RBI in 245 games with Seattle (2007-10), San Diego (2011) and the New York Mets (2012).
