The Washington Nationals have acquired outfielder Scott Hairston from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league pitcher Ivan Pineyro.

Hairston signed a two-year deal with the Cubs in February, reportedly worth $5 million. He was batting just .172 with eight homers and 19 RBI in 52 games this season.

The 33-year-old veteran hit 20 homers in 377 at-bats last year for the Mets and will give the Nats a right-handed power bat off the bench. He has 103 career homers and a .244 average in 829 games with Arizona, San Diego, Oakland, the Mets and the Cubs.

Pineyro, a 21-year-old right-hander, has combined for a record of 6-3 with a 3.24 ERA in 15 starts between Single-A Hagerstown and Potomac this season.
