Denver Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell was arrested over the weekend after hitting two cars in Summit County, Colorado.

According to the Denver Post, Russell first ran into a car in Frisco on Saturday evening. Several minutes later, at about 7:24 p.m. (m.t.), he rear- ended a police SUV in Breckenridge.

The officer in the Breckenridge Police Department SUV was injured in the crash, said Nate Reid, a Colorado State Patrol spokesman. He was taken to a local hospital, treated and released.

The Denver Broncos released a statement addressing the incident:

"Our organization is extremely disappointed and concerned with the incident involving Matt Russell. We immediately expressed our disappointment to Matt, and he is fully aware of the seriousness of this situation. This type of behavior is unacceptable and very troubling. We expect better from all employees, particularly those in leadership positions. These allegations completely contradict the values and beliefs of the Broncos regarding social responsibility. We are continuing to gather information and will handle this matter appropriately and in accordance with all NFL policies."

Russell, 40, was arrested and booked into Summit County Jail on Saturday and posted bond on Sunday. He faces charges of driving under the influence, having an open container of alcohol in his car, careless driving resulting in injury and failure to display proof of insurance.

"I deeply regret the poor judgment I demonstrated that resulted in my arrest over the weekend," said Russell in a statement released by the Broncos. "I apologize to the Denver Broncos, our fans and the National Football League for this inexcusable mistake. I'm ashamed that I represented this region and the Broncos organization in the manner that I did. I take complete responsibility for my actions and will be fully accountable. Going forward, I will take steps to ensure this never happens again."

Russell was selected by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round of the 1997 NFL Draft. He played three seasons before knee injuries forced him to retire in 2000.

Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway promoted Russell to his current position in January 2012, after three seasons as the team's college scouting director. Prior to joining the Broncos, he was a scout for the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots.
