Arlington, TX – The Texas Rangers will finally have one of their notable offseason acquisitions available for their series finale against the Houston Astros, though another will be sidelined for at least a couple of weeks.
The Rangers reinstated reliever Joakim Soria from the 60-day disabled list prior to Sunday's game, while placing designated hitter Lance Berkman on the 15-day DL with an inflamed left hip.
Starting pitcher Nick Tepesch, dealing with inflammation in his right elbow, also went on the 15-day DL, with reliever Cory Burns recalled from Triple-A Round Rock to take his place.
Soria has not pitched in the majors since September 11, 2011, while then a member of the Kansas City Royals. The two-time All-Star closer missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April of 2012, then spent the first three-plus months of this campaign rehabbing after signing a two- year contract with a club option for 2015 with the Rangers in December.
The right-hander, who is expected to serve in a setup role for All-Star closer Joe Nathan, twice saved over 40 games during his five-year stint with the Royals and owns 160 career saves along with a 2.40 earned run average over 298 big league appearances.
Berkman, who signed a one-year deal with Texas in the offseason, has battled knee problems that have limited the veteran slugger to just eight starts in the team's last 19 contests before injuring his hip Saturday. He's batting just .176 (13-for-74) in 20 games since June 1.
Tepesch last pitched on Friday, when the rookie struck out a career-high nine Astros while allowing four runs through five innings to record the win in Texas' 10-5 triumph. The 24-year-old has spent the entire season in the Rangers' rotation, posting a 4-6 record with a 4.85 ERA in 16 starts.
Burns earned a promotion by registering a stellar 1.05 ERA while converting 16-of-17 save opportunities as Oklahoma City's closer this year. The 25-year- old righty briefly pitched with the Rangers in May, permitting two runs over 3 2/3 innings over three appearances.
